Go look behind your door.
The umbrella is standing there, rolled tight, strap buttoned, tip on the floor. It has been in that corner since the second week of June. In eleven weeks it has not once been opened and left to dry.
That umbrella is now a laundry problem.
What is happening inside the fold
An umbrella has eight or ten steel ribs. They are thin, and they are plated, and the plating chips the first time you shove the thing under an auto seat on Ashok Rajpath or jam it into a bag with your tiffin.
Fold it wet and water sits in the pleats. The cloth presses flat against bare metal and stays there for twenty hours until the next shower. Twenty hours of standing water on chipped steel, in August, in Patna, at ninety percent humidity.
Steel does exactly one thing in those conditions.
Open your umbrella right now and look along the folds, especially near the tips and near that little strap. Orange-brown dots. A thin line where the rib sat. That is rust, and it has already moved off the metal and into the fabric.
How it gets from there to your sleeve
You do not carry an umbrella carefully. You tuck it under your arm at the Boring Road crossing while you dig for change. You hold it against your leg on the scooter. You lay it across your lap in a shared auto.
Wet rust transfers. It is a pigment sitting in water, and water goes wherever you press it. So it prints on the sleeve of your shirt, on the front of a light kurta, on the side of a bag. The mark is faint on the day it happens. You notice it three washes later, when it has gone from orange to dark brown and stopped fading.
By then the iron has bonded to the cotton fibre.
Soap will not touch it
Here is the part most people get wrong. Rust is not dirt. Detergent lifts oil and loose particles. Iron oxide is neither. You can scrub a rust dot with Surf for ten minutes and it will look exactly the same, just fuzzier.
Then you reach for bleach, because it is white cloth and bleach is what you do to white cloth.
Do not. Chlorine bleach reacts with iron and darkens the stain. What was a light orange speck becomes a permanent brown one. Every rust mark I have seen turn black started with somebody being helpful with a bleach cap.
Rust needs acid. Lemon juice and salt, worked into the spot, then the cloth laid flat in direct sun for twenty minutes while it stays wet. The sun is doing real work here, not just drying. Repeat it twice if you need to. Rinse properly afterwards, because leaving acid in cotton weakens it.
On a coloured kurta, test on the inside hem first. Lemon strips some dyes.
The smell is separate, and it is mould
A rolled wet umbrella also grows mildew. That flat sour smell you get when you finally open it in October is a living thing, and it is on the cloth, not in the air.
Open the umbrella all the way. Wipe the panels with a cloth dipped in water and white vinegar, half and half. Wipe both sides. Let it stand open until it is bone dry, then close it.
Do not put it out in the Patna sun to speed this up. The waterproof coating on the underside cracks and flakes in hard sunlight, and then the umbrella leaks along every seam next June. Indoors, open, with a fan on it. That is all it needs.
The habit that fixes this
You do not have to do anything clever. You have to stop doing one thing.
Stop buttoning the strap on a wet umbrella.
Come home, open it fully, stand it upside down on its handle in the bathroom or the balcony corner. Leave it open until it is dry. Then roll it. An umbrella that dries open every evening does not rust, does not smell, and does not print anything on your clothes.
Wipe the ribs with a dry cloth once a week during monsoon. Thirty seconds. If a rib is already rusting, a drop of oil on the joint stops it spreading.
And that plastic sleeve the umbrella came in, the one you kept because it seemed useful. Throw it away. Sealing a damp umbrella in plastic is the fastest way to ruin it.
If the marks are already there
Look at your light shirts now, before the season ends. Rust that is a few weeks old still comes out. Rust that has been through six wash cycles and a hot iron usually does not, because heat sets it the same way it sets a haldi stain.
