The blazer is in your almirah right now. Plastic cover on it, wire hanger, pushed to the left side where the good clothes live. You wore it to a wedding in Danapur in December and to one interview before that. You handed it to a shop, got it back pressed and flat and smelling of nothing, paid two hundred rupees, and hung it up.
You have no idea what happened to it in between.
It is a wash. The liquid is not water.
Your jacket goes into a drum that looks like a front-load washing machine. The drum spins. There is liquid sloshing around in there. The liquid is a solvent, perchloroethylene or a hydrocarbon spirit, and when the cycle ends the machine boils it off, filters it, and keeps it for the next load. Same drum, same tumbling, different liquid.
That one swap is the whole point. Solvent dissolves oil. Water does not. Chain grease on a trouser cuff, hair oil on a collar, ghee from a wedding buffet, all of it lets go in solvent without anyone scrubbing the cloth.
Water is what ruins the jacket
Cut open a blazer and look. Under the outer wool there is canvas, sometimes horsehair, a sheet of fusing glued to the front panels, padding at the shoulder, a lining cut on a different grain. Five or six materials, stitched into a shape.
Soak all that and each layer takes on water differently and lets it go differently. The glue on the fusing lifts in patches. You get bubbles across the lapel that no iron will ever flatten. The canvas shrinks a little, the wool over it does not, and the jacket stops sitting flat on your shoulder.
Wool has a second problem. Every fibre is covered in microscopic scales, laid like roof tiles. Add water, warmth and rubbing and those scales hook into each other and never come apart. That is felting, and it is what turned your father's sweater into a sweater for a child. Solvent leaves the scales alone.
Solvent is brilliant at oil and useless at sweat
Here is the part nobody explains at the counter.
Sweat is water. Salt, urea, a little protein, all of it water soluble. Solvent cannot touch any of it. So the sherwani that came back looking perfect still carries a stiff ring inside the armhole after three Patna wedding seasons, and one day that ring turns brown and stays brown.
A shop that knows the work treats that patch by hand first, with water and the right agent, and then sends the garment into the solvent. That is a separate step and it costs a person a minute of attention. Which is exactly why you have to say it out loud. Point at the underarm. Point at the mark on the front and say what spilled there. Ten seconds of talking decides whether the stain lifts or gets set forever by the press at the end.
Take it in early too. A stain that sits for six months in Patna damp oxidises into the fibre. Nobody is pulling that back out.
The plastic cover is doing damage
That thin sheet they hand your clothes back in has one job. It keeps road dust off the garment between the shop and your gate. It is not storage.
Wool always holds a little moisture. Seal it inside plastic in August, in a Patna cupboard, with the air at eighty percent humidity, and you have built a small greenhouse. You open it in October to wear for Dussehra and there is a grey-green bloom across both shoulders and a smell that takes more than an afternoon to fix.
Pull the cover off at the door. Hang the jacket outside the almirah for a day, on the balcony grill in shade or under a fan. Then put it away on a broad hanger with space on both sides so air can move past it.
Ask where the machine is
Some shops in Patna own the machine. Plenty are collection counters, and your bundle goes across town on the back of a bike. Neither is wrong. Both have to end at a real machine.
So ask. Ask which solvent they use and where the plant is. Anyone who runs one answers in a second. Then check the garment when it comes home. Real dry cleaning leaves a faint sharp smell for a day and then nothing at all. If your blazer comes back smelling of detergent, with the wooden creases of a hand wash, it went into a bucket and you paid solvent rates for it.
Half those tags are lying to you
Manufacturers print "dry clean only" to protect themselves, not your clothes.
A plain cotton kurta does not need solvent. A polyester saree does not. Most printed synthetic sarees, viscose tops and cotton palazzos are perfectly happy in cold water and a gentle wash, and if you obey the tag you will hand over five hundred rupees a year for nothing.
Solvent is for wool, silk, structured jackets, heavy zari, real embroidery, and anything built with padding and lining inside it. That is the list. Everything else, wash it.
Ten minutes, fifteen years
You own maybe four pieces of clothing that cost real money and come out four times a year. A blazer. A silk saree. A wedding sherwani. One heavy lehenga. The rest of the year they hang in a dark cupboard in some of the wettest air in the country.
Ten minutes of care is the difference between fifteen years and three.
